Overcome Negativity and Jealousy: Focus on Gratitude

spirituality May 17, 2020

Our society greatly emphasizes material possessions such as cars, homes, and clothes. We tend to derive our value and social status from these things and aspire to acquire more money, houses, and vehicles. Despite our relentless pursuit of these things, we fail to find true happiness. Rather than feeling grateful for what we do have, we often envy those who have more than us, creating a sense of dissatisfaction in our lives.

As Christians, it can be challenging to live according to Biblical principles while also struggling with jealousy. Imagine constantly trying to outdo our neighbors, coworkers, or family members. The pressure to compete can be overwhelming and ultimately cause us to lose sight of what truly matters - relationships, children, and health. Placing too much value on material possessions can leave us feeling unfulfilled and create an inner tension that takes away from our happiness. Remember that true happiness cannot be achieved by accumulating material possessions, as they cannot bring lasting joy and contentment.

Romans 15:13 – “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Remember What You Are Grateful For

Ephesians 5:20 – “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”

Have you ever tried to reflect on the positive aspects of your life without considering any material possessions? Do you find it difficult to appreciate and acknowledge the good things in your life because you are always searching for something greater or superior? It is essential to be mindful of the blessings we have in our lives, both big and small, to cultivate a sense of contentment and fulfillment.

We all have big dreams for ourselves, but we can only begin to work toward our goals once we accept who we are and where we are. That acceptance begins with a sincere appreciation for the life lessons of yesterday and the talents and skills we have today.

Sure, we all want a big house, nice furniture, big-screen TVs, better-paying jobs, luxury cars, gourmet food, fancy jewelry, and designer clothes – but how can we appreciate the finer things in life if we cannot be thankful for the simple things? After all, a big-screen TV will not matter if you do not have your eyes to see and your ears to hear! Of course, desiring good quality items is not wrong, but your focus should be on living and enjoying your life, not things.

  • Expressing your gratitude does not have to be reserved for Thanksgiving dinner. Share with your family why you are grateful today, and listen to your family's words in return.

  • Encourage your kids to dig deep into their souls to find gratitude. Kids need to learn how to take their focus off material items and onto influential people, positive experiences, and quality of life.

Refocus Your Thoughts with a Gratitude Journal

Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Keeping a gratitude journal is one of the most effective ways to cultivate gratitude. A gratitude journal is simply a notebook where you write down everything in life you are thankful for. It does not have to take more than 5 minutes in the early morning or before bed each night.

The idea is to clear your mind, reflect on the day, and see the goodness in life. This involves writing down things you are thankful for regularly.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Buy or make a nice, attractive journal so you will take care of it and look forward to journaling daily.

  • Set aside a few minutes each day to write in your gratitude journal. This is commonly the first thing in the morning or right before bed.

  • Write down specific things you are grateful for rather than general statements. Reflect on anything new that came your way: new friends, clients, or opportunities.

  • Do not be shy about repeating things from previous days; praising your good health and loving family never tires.

  • Did a friend do something nice for you today? Did you find a lost item? Did you handle a difficult situation well? Gratitude is not only for big things; you can also be grateful for the small stuff.

  • Periodically, review your journal and read all you are grateful for. It will be a great pick-me-up on especially difficult days.

Journaling is a practice that can profoundly impact your outlook on life. By consistently adding entries to your journal, you train your mind to think in a new way. And by focusing on the positive things in your life and expressing gratitude for them, you can increase your overall sense of well-being and contentment.

You will notice a positive shift in your perspective, and as a result, you will feel more connected to the people around you. Journaling has a way of revealing the hidden beauty in your life that may have gone unnoticed before.

So, take some time each day to write in your journal and see how it can transform your life.

Review Bible Verses about Trusting in God and His Timing

As we delve into these verses, we can better understand the significance of trusting in God's plan for our lives. It entails relinquishing our understanding and submitting to His will. This reminds us that everything happens in God's perfect timing, and we should patiently wait for His will to be done.

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

  • Ecclesiastes 3:11 – “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

  • Isaiah 40:31 – “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

  • Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Trusting in God's plan can give us the strength to soar above challenges and walk through difficult times without losing hope. Furthermore, when we feel lost or uncertain, we can find solace in knowing God is in control. In times of confusion and chaos, we need to be still and acknowledge that He is God, the ultimate authority in our lives.
