A Christian Makes Quality Time for Jesus on the Job

spirituality Mar 01, 2020

If you accept Jesus as your LORD and Savior, you promise to give Him your whole life - all aspects of it. As a Christian, your workplace is not just where you do a job. It is a ministry that Jesus has called you to do for His kingdom. No matter what type of work Jesus calls you to perform, it is essential that you bring prayer, as Jesus did, into your daily walk with Him.

Taking faith to your workplace also means you seek to please God in your decision-making rather than other people. We believe in a risen Lord. Jesus is present among us. When we represent him, verbally or non-verbally, we introduce someone to the risen Christ.

Make Time for Jesus at Work

Matthew 28:19-20 says: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus expressed these words to His disciples just before He returned to heaven. His disciples… a tax collector, an anti-government radical, a man who might well have been from Missouri (he wanted to see it to believe it), and fisherman. Did you notice that none of these men prepared to be in ministry before Jesus called them? That did not make a difference, though. As Jesus called them, they answered. While they worked, the disciples eagerly made time for Jesus.

They made time for Jesus while working by being like Jesus while working. You can, too.

Making time for Jesus while working

Your commitment to Jesus is steadfast and valuable at work when you:

  • Refuse to join in office gossip and backstabbing. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29
  • Give your most excellent efforts to your work. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Colossians 3:23
  • Stay above reproach. This includes not taking office supplies because “They’ll never miss them,” or “They owe me that much.” Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Ephesians 4:28
  • Make sure that the career path you choose will not dishonor God or cause anyone to doubt the genuineness of your proclaimed faith. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

As a Christian woman, you are a reflection of Jesus to the unbeliever and unsaved. Who you are is who they believe Jesus is. And to your brothers and sisters in Christ and the Church as a whole, you are to set an illustration of what faithful obedience looks like. To put it another way, making time for your commitment to Jesus means making time to:

  • Reflect and deliberate ahead of speaking.
  • Contemplate the possible outcomes of your actions prior to acting.
  • Keep in mind that your lifestyle and the choices you make reflect your heart…your true heart.

Understand that your conduct at work can bring praise to Jesus.

This provides women another reason to feel good about their work. “Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.” Titus 2:9,10 It could even turn out that one of your coworkers will examine the Bible because of your good example.ā€‹
