On April 28th each year, nations around the globe pause to recognize World Day for Safety and Health at Work — a day set aside to highlight the great importance of creating and maintaining safe, healthy work environments for all.
This vital observance, led by the United Nations and the International Labour Organization, calls upon individuals, businesses, and governments to reflect on the dignity of labor and the sacred responsibility of protecting those who work with their hands, hearts, and minds.
Work, when rightly understood, is a gift from God — a calling to stewardship, creativity, and service. In the very beginning, before sin entered the world, man was placed in the Garden of Eden "to dress it and to keep it." (Genesis 2:15, KJV) Work was part of the beauty of creation, intended to be fruitful, meaningful, and yes — safe.
It is fitting, then, that we take time to honor those who work and to advocate for conditions that protect the bodies, minds, and spirits of every worker.
For those of us who walk by faith, workplace safety is not merely a policy — it is a reflection of the command to love our neighbors as ourselves.
"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." — Matthew 22:39 (KJV)
When we prioritize safety and health at work, we affirm the God-given worth of every human soul.
We acknowledge that each life is precious, that every laborer matters, and that stewardship extends not only to fields and finances, but to people themselves.
Promoting safe, healthy work environments is an act of justice, mercy, and love. It mirrors the heart of Christ, who calls us to lift burdens, to protect the vulnerable, and to care for the well-being of those in our charge.
Whether you are an employer, an employee, or a volunteer, there are ways you can embody the spirit of this day:
Create a culture where every worker feels valued, heard, and cared for. Safety begins with a heart posture of respect.
Stay informed about best practices for workplace health and safety. Advocate for training, resources, and communication that prevent accidents before they occur.
A healthy workplace addresses more than physical hazards — it nurtures mental health, emotional resilience, and spiritual encouragement as well.
Wherever God has placed you, you can be an advocate for truth, kindness, and integrity. When you speak up for safer practices or offer a listening ear to a struggling coworker, you reflect the heart of Christ.
As Christians, we do not simply work for human supervisors.
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;" — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
This verse reminds us that our work, our advocacy for safety, and our care for one another are all acts of worship.
When we seek to build healthier, safer workplaces, we are not merely following human laws — we are fulfilling a higher calling to honor God through the way we treat others.
