Guarding Your Heart – Protecting Your Mind and Spirit with God’s Truth

spirituality Jun 02, 2019

Christian women are called to guard their hearts because everything we do flows from them. In biblical terms, the heart encompasses our emotions, thoughts, desires, and will. When we allow harmful influences—from our thoughts, environment, or relationships—into our hearts, they disrupt our peace and can draw us away from God’s truth. A Truth Mindset begins with guarding the heart and ensuring that we filter everything through the lens of Scripture.

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV) reminds us: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Our thoughts, emotions, and decisions are deeply connected to our hearts' condition; if we do not guard it, we leave ourselves open to confusion, fear, and even sin.

Why We Must Guard Our Hearts

Our hearts are like a wellspring, providing life and direction. If the source is corrupted, the rest of our lives will reflect that corruption. What we allow into our minds and hearts—through media, conversations, and relationships—can either build us up or tear us down. As women of God, we must diligently guard what enters our hearts to stand firm in God’s truth and live a life that reflects His will.

Zig Ziglar said, You cannot tailor-make the situations in life, but you can tailor-make the attitudes to fit those situations. When we guard our hearts, we can maintain a godly attitude and perspective, no matter what comes our way.

How to Guard Your Heart

Guarding your heart requires being intentional about what you allow to influence you. Here are a few steps to help you protect your heart and live according to God’s truth:

  1. Stay Rooted in God’s Word The Word of God is our ultimate source of truth and protection. Regularly immersing yourself in Scripture will help you discern truth from lies and guard your heart against harmful influences. Meditate on the promises and commands of the Bible to strengthen your spiritual foundation.

Psalm 119:11 (KJV) says: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Hiding God’s Word in our hearts helps protect us from negative influences and keeps us aligned with His will.

  2. Pray for Discernment Prayer is a powerful tool for guarding your heart. Ask God for discernment so that you can recognize when something or someone is leading you away from His truth. Pray for wisdom to make decisions that honor Him and protect your spiritual well-being.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV) encourages us: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Through prayer, God guards our hearts with His peace.

  3. Set Boundaries in Relationships and Media Not every relationship or piece of media benefits your spiritual health. Setting boundaries is essential to guarding your heart. Be mindful of the content you consume, the conversations you engage in, and the people you surround yourself with. Limit exposure to negative or ungodly influences to create space for God’s truth to flourish in your life.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV) warns us: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” Surround yourself with godly influences, encouraging spiritual growth and protecting your heart from harmful messages.

  4. Renew Your Mind Daily As discussed in previous blogs, renewing your mind is essential to guarding your heart. Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Replace negative, ungodly thoughts with the truth of Scripture. This practice will help you guard your heart by keeping your mind focused on what is true, noble, and pure.

Zig Ziglar reminded us, "Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” When we guard our hearts by renewing our minds, we allow positive, godly thinking to shape our lives.

The Science Behind Guarding Your Heart

Science shows that our mental and emotional health is closely linked to the influences we allow into our lives. Studies have found that regular exposure to negative media and toxic relationships can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. On the other hand, those who engage in positive thinking, prayer, and healthy relationships tend to have lower stress levels and better mental health.

The idea of “guarding your heart” aligns with the scientific understanding that we must protect our mental and emotional well-being by being mindful of what we allow into our lives. This spiritual principle leads to a stronger relationship with God and promotes overall mental health.

The Power of a Guarded Heart

When we guard our hearts, we set ourselves up for spiritual success. A guarded heart is less likely to be swayed by worldly temptations and more likely to remain focused on God’s truth. This does not mean we will not face challenges, but it does mean that we will be better equipped to handle them with grace and faith.

A guarded heart allows us to maintain peace, joy, and clarity, even in life’s difficulties. It helps us to stand firm in our faith and make decisions that honor God. When your heart is guarded, you can better hear God’s voice and follow His leading, resulting in a life that glorifies Him.

Scientific Fact on Media Influence

Research shows that consuming negative media, whether through TV, social media, or conversations, can increase stress, anxiety, and negative thought patterns. Limiting exposure to negative influences and focusing on positive, life-affirming content has improved mental well-being. This supports the biblical principle of guarding your heart and mind to maintain spiritual health.
